Akua Naru grew up with gospel music in the first place, but when she was only 9 years old, she discovered hip hop. Her uncle sneaked in some classic hip hop records, which was absolutely unacceptable, of course… The New Havense singer knew this was her genre immediately. It didn’t took long before she expressed her love for the two styles on stage with her incredible talent.
Nowadays, Akua Naru is master of combining multiple styles as classic ‘boombap’ sounds, smoothjazz and conscious hip hop. Her smooth voice and melodic spoken words are a vague reminder of Lauryn Hill, but mostly show how jazz and hip hop go perfectly together. Ying & Yang, Pooh & Honey, Jazz & Hip Hop, that sorta thing…
