For BIG SPECIAL – Joe Hicklin (vocals) and Callum Moloney (drums) – their sound comes from vital, frustrated young working-class voices that are not always heard on the scale they deserve. It’s a frustration that emerges through a voice that is at times rough and raw, but at other times sensitive, desperate and soulful. Hicklin’s fiery voice ranges from profound punk cries and jagged spoken word to elevated soul and back again, taken from their predecessors, crushed under the weight of history and re-adapted for a new generation. It is intense, raw and angry at a world without options, the thinning of common understanding between England’s social classes, the frustration with repeating cycles and the feeling of watching your own life unfold from the outside.

BIG SPECIAL is about despair, struggle and a Britain in decline, where pride is found in the darkest moments and the class struggle is always down. They are songs of hope and despair that channel the voice you hear when you look in the mirror and see your true self – fight songs for a world gone wrong. Their live performances are a stunning combination of punk, hip-hop, pounding drums, phenomenal vocals, spoken word and genre-transcending music.
