Stephanie Pan – Have Robot Dog, Will Travel – A Song Cycle for the Technological Age
Have Robot Dog, Will Travel is ‘a homage to abstraction, ambiguity, words that are unspoken’. Stephanie Pan questions the idealised image of the digital technology as the key to a perfect world: ‘I am looking for a dialogue between the digital and the analogue world.’ Stephanie performs wil toy instruments, her autoharp, vintage keyboards – all instruments she plays by hand and digital instruments such as small computers that react to their surroundings due to sensors. (‘like insects that will do whatever they want.’) The lyrics of Have Robot Dog, Will Travel, which she mostly wrote herself circle around the theme ambiguity. About the other side of the complete freedom: anonymity and being isolated. About the confusion when something pulls you in as much as it pushes you away.
