‘Misplaced Childhood’ is one of those classics, one of those records which conquered a permanent spot in 80s progrock-lovers’ record players. For those lovers, it’s needless to say  Marillion’s legendary ex-singer Fish doesn’t need any introduction.

British band Marillion put their stamp on progressive rock with hits like ‘Kayleigh’ and ‘Incommunicado’. Derek William Dick, what his real name is, decided to leave the band in 1988 to start a solo-career.

Without Fish’s emotional and special voice with Scottish tongue trap, Marillion wasn’t how it used to be. Luckily we kept hearing from the virtuoso: he released 10 (!!!) solo-albums. His incredible talent for writing poetic texts and heavy song structures is undeniable, because ‘’your heart must be made of stone if his lyrics don’t touch you’’, thus OOR.

In particular his most recent feat of arms ‘A Feast Of Consequences’ (2013) is seen as the best album he ever made. ‘’‘A Feast Of Consequences’ is a lot, but mostly a masterpiece.’’, thus Progwereld. Also the website Progarchives.com wrote: “Feast’ benefits from repeated listening, revealing itself in layers, but the way this album has been crafted with such intelligent lyrics leaves me convinced that this work will stand as one of Fish’s very finest efforts.” Amen.

“ "Perhaps Fish's greatest talent lies in his lyric writing. His introspective lyrics, often dealing with his own personal problems and addictions, can in many cases be considered fine poetry..." “

Steve Johnson
