GALLIANO

precursors of the current Uk Jazz and Uk soul movements

Tuesday 10 December 2024 2024

Galliano, the first group signed to the pioneering acid jazz label Talkin’ Loud, formed in 1988 around acid house DJ Rob Gallagher but later focused on laid-back and jazzy soul with a strong emphasis on live presentation and environmental issues. On 10 December, they will be at the Grote Zaal!

A loose collective for the first few years, the group included Gallagher with raps and turntables, singer Valerie Étienne (aka Auntie Val), bassist Ernie McKone, drummer Crispin Taylor and many more collaborators. Galliano achieved huge success in 1994 with their album The Plot Thickens, which peaked at number eight in the UK Albums Chart. After a 25-year hiatus, Galliano will release a scintillating new album later this summer, whose first single, “Circles Going Round the Sun”, showcases the archetypal Galliano style, combining Valerie Etienne’s soaring vocals with Rob Gallagher’s uniquely wry observations, full of cultural commentary and reminders of DIY club culture.
