Martin Rev plays Suicide is the instrumentalist and founder of the legendary New Yorks electro protopunk band Suicide together with Alan Vega who died in 2016. Their music influenced acts like Depeche Mode, New Order and Jesus & Mary Chain, as well as Nick Cave, Savages, Sisters Of Mercy, Lydia Lunch and even Bruce Springsteen all covered Suicide. Martin Rev will play a rare exclusive Suicide set.
Pioneers of industrial/acidpunk Chrome from San Fransisco released several masterpieces in the late 70s which influenced a wide range of musical genres, from the avant-rock of Sonic Youth and Butthole Surfers to Industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails, Ministry and Marilyn Manson.
Rock n roll couple Fred and Toody are known from Portland garage punk legends Dead Moon who are truly one of the most independent underground bands of all time. Their amazing songs are covered by bands like ”A Place To Bury Strangers”, ”Pearl Jam” (who even covered several songs by them) and ”The Deaf” (from The Hague). Expect an acoustic set with songs of Dead Moon, Pierced Arrows and more.
New sounds are coming from Manchester’s band The Underground Youth. A blend of dark psychedelia and post-punk and is the solo project of Craig Dyer. Stockholm’s electronic band Agent Side Grinder are known for their powerful and mighty live performances with strong synth rhythms and industrial and melodic sounds. They became one of the Europe’s leading synth-wave bands of nowadays.
Belgium’s Whispering Sons Belgium post-punk band Whispering Sons were formed in 2013 and won this years Humo Rock Rally without any problem, and are playing non stop since then. Australian singer Zoè Zanias was once known as the voice of Linea Aspera and Keluar and both bands played at previous Grauzone editions. Recently Zoe performs solo under the name Zanias and creates dancable hypnotising electronic music.
Widely considered one of the most powerful women in modern rock, Jehnny Beth has been performing as front woman of her band, Savages. For this world premiere Jehnny Beth will perform solo at the piano in an intimate setting, debuting new, solo songs and offering another perspective on familiar songs.
New wave/post-punk legend and former singer/bassist of The Chameleons Mark Burgess returns, after their performance on Grauzone 2013, again with his band Chameleons Vox and will play a special ”best of” set.
Swedish ”queen of darkness” Anna von Hausswolff is an internationally celebrated musician, and her music speaks a language of its very own. Her sound is huge and crushingly beautiful – as it is dark as the night and embraces everything that defines gothic.
Seattle’s singer-songwriter King Dude creates dark spiritual gothic folk, influenced by country, blues, gospel, wave, metal & acoustic guitars that worship evil in a macabre atmosphere. He collaborated with like minded artists as Chelsea Wolfe and was the highlight at fests like Incubate and Roadburn
No Wave/Post-punk legend, singer, writer, poet and actress Lydia Lunch will give an exclusive spoken word performance at Grauzone. She’s known for her intense performances and collaborated with artists like Nick Cave, Sonic Youth and Michael Gira/Swans.
One of the most spectacular Dutch underground bands is Yokocola with front woman Sidhi Achmat. Their psychedelic postpunk recalls Siouxsie meets Hawkwind. From The Hague there’ll exiting analog electronic sounds by Elektrovolt.
Besides the music program Grauzone presents the new documentary Adrian Borland: Walking In the Opposite Direction, which will be the only screening besides the IDFA festival. Connected to the movie Grauzone presents an exclusive exhibition with unique material of the the British band The Sound. Following with an Symposium, filmprogram, record fair, afterparty and DJ’s.
