HAAGSCH COLLEGE: CHAOS IN DE WESTERSE WERELD

Beatrice de Graaf on the right-wing radical era and its consequences for our democracy.

Monday 3 November 2025

Trump and Musk are radically transforming America and sidelining a divided Europe as they make deals with Putin. Across Europe, far-right politicians are now openly dreaming of unchecked power. As democracy comes under pressure worldwide and strong leaders take control, ghosts from the past begin to emerge. During the theater evening Chaos in the Western World, historian Beatrice de Graaf convincingly shows how the present eerily resembles past times—and how it also reassuringly differs. How can we, with knowledge of history, recognize the lurking dangers to democracy, or put our fears into perspective?
