Bassist Rinus Gerritsen takes the stage to share the story of a band on the verge of breaking up, determined to deliver one last smash hit. The global success of Twilight Zone gave Golden Earring a second life in 1982 and ushered in a new creative era. Producer Shell Schellekens brought a fresh disco-rock sound to the table, while director Dick Maas created unique music videos that made waves worldwide. “At the end of the seventies, we were at a standstill, but Cut and N.E.W.S. gave us a new lease on life.”
With Twilight Zone, Golden Earring achieved a Top 10 hit in the United States, while the song also became a big success in Canada. The accompanying album, Cut, climbed to number 24 on the U.S. album charts. The release coincided perfectly with the launch of MTV, making the iconic spy-thriller music video an instant hit. Two years later, the band struck gold again with the single When The Lady Smiles and the album N.E.W.S., followed by a final successful U.S. tour.
Iconic Albums – Cut and N.E.W.S. is the follow-up to the successful theater tour about the album Moontan, which Gerritsen and Kuiper performed in various theaters in late 2023. During the Iconic Albums series, legendary albums by renowned artists take center stage, explored through interviews with the artists themselves and others who experienced the making of these albums firsthand.
Iconic Albums is a concept by Martin Kuiper, also known for the live documentary evening Behind the Music, Muzikale Voetsporen, and the video interview platform FaceCulture.
