JEMBAA GROOVE

Friday 4 October 2024 2024

Berlin-based Afro-Jazz group Jembaa Groove was formed in 2020 by producer and bassist Yannick Nolting and Ghanaian percussion legend and vocalist Eric Owusu. Inspired by jazzy and soulful sounds past and present, and by both classical and modern sounds from Ghana and its diaspora, the 7-piece band offers a contemporary take on highlife, jazz and soul. They will be in our Kleine Zaal on October 4, 2024.

Steeped in ancestral currents from Accra to Berlin and London, driven by deep, conga-led rhythms and seductive warm horn riffs, Jembaa Groove comes with their new album “Ye Ankasa | We Ourselves” and a newly formed sound, reminding us that contemporary, soulful jazz is not merely a London affair.

Highlife, Ghana’s colorful national tradition, is at the heart of Berlin-based Jembaa Groove. This new follow-up to their 2022 debut album goes even deeper in provoking new perceptions of jazz and soul music, assisted by young and old blood from Ghana and its diaspora.
