“My latest project is affectionately called Yankee Go Home – which to me is a nod to us ‘Yankees’ taking up the music of our homeland. This band plays Roots-Rock-Jazz, which is one way to define it, although to be honest I hate doing that! The concept is to cover Americana/Rock hits and jazz up folk songs, plus some of my own songs written in that style. I’m rediscovering a lot of my teenage Rock ‘n Roll roots , naturally influenced by my 50 years of jazz practice. The band consists of Jon Cowherd (keyboardist with Brian Blade Fellowship and Cassandra Wilson, among others), Vicente Archer (double bassist with Robert Glasper, Louis Hayes and Scofield Combo 66, etc.), Josh Dion (drums) and myself – guitarist John Scofield. These guys are remarkably versatile, simply the best when it comes to interactive, creative playing. We explore rock, funk, country, jazz and free music and have a blast doing it. I’m enthusiastic about this collaboration.
To give you an idea of what we will be playing, here are some examples:
Old Man (Neil Young)
Wichita Lineman (Jimmy Webb)
The Creator Has A Master Plan (Pharoah Saunders)
Uncle John’s Band (Grateful Dead)
Jesus Children (Stevie Wonder)
Somewhere (Leonard Bernstein)
Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly)
John Hardy (traditional)
Fields of Gold (Sting)
The Grand Tour (George Jones)
Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Neil Young)
Estimated Prophet (Grateful Dead)
PLUS SCOFIELD ORIGINALS!!!” (John Scofield)”
