Born in the Netherlands, and raised in Asia. As a result Kim spent most of his youth in Bangkok and Phnom Penh and his teenage years in Kathmandu. Kim Janssen connects memories of Loi Krathong nights, earthquakes and political unrest with a homely image of front gardens, birthday parties and Chinese restaurants with his music.
On his latest album Cousins he was inspired by Sufjan Stevens, while The National is a clear reference during the somewhat more solid rock moments. Folk music made place for grandly arranged, almost symphonic pop, which must be overwhelming in such a small location.
