One of the themes of MJAZZ 2018 is the avant-garde Chicago trend, where jazz is approached in a totally different way with electronica, hip hop and sampling. Also, attention is paid to the unique way the Brooklyn Raga Massive collective edits jazz to Indian classical music. You can find more info at mondriaanjazz.nl

Makaya Mccraven: ‘Universal Beings’ ft Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (USA)
A contemporary supergroup specifically curated for MJAZZ18, around one of the most in-demand and versatile drummers of today: Makaya McCraven. The group will include Jeff Parker (Tortoise, Chicago Underground), Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Dr. Dre, J Dilla, Flying Lotus), Brandee Younger, Soweto Kinch, Junius Paul and Ben LaMar Gay.
Makaya McCraven is praised as the revolutionary leader of the new Chicago avant-garde, in which electronics, hip-hop and jazz are brought together in an innovative way. In the past, Makaya collaborated with greats as Archie Shepp and Yussef Lateef and opened for WuTang Clan, 50 Cent and more, but definitively broke through with his groundbreaking album “In The Moment”, which appeared on the equally groundbreaking label International Anthem. Here, Makaya took over 48 hours of jams that he chopped up and pasted into the “Bitches Brew” album of today. After the success of that album in 2016, Makaya recorded the analogue album Highly Rare (2017), and meanwhile recorded more impro-sessions in different cities, with various kindred spirits: the CHIxLONxLA Sessions. The festival brings together that spirit and musicians from all three cities, for a one-off and unique concert, totally improvised and cutting edge.
Brooklyn Raga Massive ft. Eric Vloeimans (USA/NL)
Brooklyn Raga Massive (BRM) is a collective of forward thinking musicians rooted in and inspired by Indian classical music, based in Brooklyn and Harlem, New York. Hailed as “Leaders of the Raga Renaissance” by The New Yorker, BRM creates original composed music by its members, but also music by a.o. John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane and Terry Riley in a unique cross-cultural Raga inspired discourse, merging the jazz world and the Indian Classical world in a unique way. BRM will feature musical director and drummer/tabla player Sameer Gupta, bassist Rahsaan Carter, Arun Ramamurthy on violin, and harpist Brandee Younger, to name a few. As BRM is an incubator of new music collaborations MJAZZ has curated a unique collaboration with highly-acclaimed trumpeter/composer from The Netherlands, Eric Vloeimans. Classical schooled, Vloeimans is known for shaping improvisational music and jazz with classical music, electronica, Arabic music and more. He has led various groups breaching barriers between music from different cultures. This will be the first time Vloeimans will work closely with the Indian Classical music, which will surely result in a remarkably dynamic, surprising and utterly unique concert.
#MJAZZ
Mondriaan Jazz Festival is a collaboration between Good Music Company and Paard with the support of the township The Hague and multiple charities. #MJAZZ translates the love for jazz-music of Mondriaan to a new progressive jazz-festival with international allure. Discovering music and renewing are the focus, and visitors are spoiled with exclusively made projects for #MJAZZ that will provide unique experiences. One of the core assumptions of the festival is that if Mondriaan still would be alive, none of the #MJAZZ programmed acts would not suit in his impressive record collection.
