Puggy is a remarkable band born unexpectedly in an African bar. Englishman Matthew Irons, Swede Egil ‘Ziggy’ Franzen and France’s Romain Despampe joined forces on the streets of Brussels. Belgium hospitably hosted Puggy’s first concerts – atypical, unfamiliar, off-road performances where pop slashed a path along the border between rock and various other influences gathered creating their sound-without-borders. Puggy headed for England where they toured local pubs and learned the harsh realities of their trade. Back home, the trio injected their accumulated energy into ‘Dubois Died Today’, a triumphant first album. The last copy was soon sold and the album fuelled their reputation even more.
Armed with this experience, the group got down to making ‘Something You Might Like’, a second album that confirmed their unique spirit. Solidly rooted in pop culture, the tunes unfold around explosive acoustic guitar strings. Methonomic beats burst on all sides, bass lines ricochet and vocals soar – as did Puggy. This second achievement set the stage for sold-out concerts and stamped their multicoloured hallmark on a modern pop landscape largely unaccustomed to rainbows.
Perfectionists, obsessed by a need to progress and evolve, the band reviewed their choices, honed their song writing and locked themselves away for a month in the depths of ICP – the legendary Brussels studios. On ‘To Win The World’, the trio have achieved a perfect balance of power and elegance, rock impulsion and pulses of synth. This new album raises Puggy to the summit of international pop.
