Emika (UK)
With the release of her eponymous debut album on Ninja Tune this fall, British-born and Berlin-based electronic composer Emika was catapulted in the international spotlights. A string of raving reviews of her dubstep-oriented but oh so adventurous and explorative sound followed.
Objekt (UK)
TJ Hertz has become one of the most admired artists of the year under his moniker Objekt, after the release of his first two white labels: delectable slabs of techno-infused dubstep – wild, gurgling progressive works that build and grow from the simplest sounds to points of unimaginable intensity.
Jimmy Edgar (US)
With an album called XXX in his back catalogue Jimmy Edgar should be the resident artist of State-X New Forms and he kind of is: he is one of the very first acts to do a return visit to this festival. Born in Detroit he adopted electronic music at a very early age, but he has also had a blooming career as a fashion photographer.
Actress (UK)
Oddly enough Darren Cunningham’s (a.k.a. Actress) album Splazsh was released through Honest Jon’s Records, a label mostly associated with world music. But come to think of it: it is not that odd. Cunningham is not a man to think in boxes, extracting electronic music from inspirations as wide and diverse as thinkable. Call it dubstep, call it techno, call it IDM: if you’re an actress you can get away with everything.
Machinedrum (US)
Once in a while an album comes along that is so jaw-dropping rich in ideas that it leaves the listener overwhelmed. One of those certainly is Room(s) by long-serving New York-producer Travis Stewart, switching easily between IDM, abstract hiphop, house, worldbeat, juke and jungle.
