SYMPHONIC JUNCTION #3: JANNE SCHRA & RESIDENTIE ORKEST

Saturday 22 February 2014 2014

Crossing bridges could be seen as a dialogue between the Residentie Orkest and a popmusic icon, this time with Janne Schra. During this concert, the similarities and contrasts of pop music and classical music will be examined. Don’t be surprised when a classical orchestra might be able to rock and some songer-songwriters turn out to be classically timeless, and violinists and guitarists play together like they have never done it any other way.

Janne Schra
Janne gained her reputation as a fantastic singer when her band Room Eleven broke through to the mainstream in 2006. The band toured all over the world, recorded an album in New York and played big jazz festivals like the Montreal Jazz Festival. One of the highlights was a sold out show in the beautiful theatre Carré in Amsterdam. A dream came true, but one that Janne felt was more like a rollercoaster, and after a while she decided it was time for a change.

That feeling quickly became apparent when she sang a live duet with American singer-songwriter M. Ward. It was a magical moment where everything clicked into place. She wanted to be able to perform in a subdued way, and she longed for the time when even though she was shy, she sang her songs alone, playing the piano. Janne felt that that feeling had to come back, the feeling that nothing else compares to. Where you slowly grow into yourself on stage, allow yourself to be small and vulnerable without the show-mask on stage. That is what Janne Schra wants.
