PAARD TIPS for ESNS24

Every year part of the PAARD team travels to the far north for the European showcase festival Eurosonic Noorderslag. In this post we introduce the acts we are looking forward on the Marketing & Program department.

Tips from programmer Maria Sanchez Garcia:

Arny Margret: beautiful acoustic singer/songwriter music from Iceland. Indie folk that knows how to touch you. Sounds familiar and very own at the same time.

No Guidnce: British R&B boy band, overtly influenced by 90’s R&B yet super fresh and contemporary.

yunè pinku: electronic R&B/soul with two-step/UK rave/left field house influences. Super vibey/clubby but also nice listening music. (photo)

I’m going to cheat and add a 4th anyway sorry choices is hard!!!

Brintex Collective: jazz is totally cool again and Brintex Collective totally proves that. Rotterdam collective making UK influenced jazz with hip hop and electronic influences. They put on a great show at ITGWO and don’t expect anything else during ESNS.

Tips from programmer Henk Koolen:

English Teacher (strange that it hasn’t been mentioned yet, the only act I’m really curious about) (photo)

Viji

Julia Colom

Tips from programmer Guido van Dieren:

Elmiene – I saw this guy last year in Brighton in a full tent on the beach. What a sensation. New soul star in the making. Vocally a beast! (photo)

Sekou – Another new soul man. 18 years old, started doing covers on intagram, now nominated for BBC sound of 2024. Sky is the limit for Sekou

Soyuz – Think Milton Nascimento, Lô Borges, Burnier e Cartier, Arthur Verocai but from Ukraine. Brazilian music from Ukraine! Yes it is possible and good too.

TIPS from programmer Joris Postulart:

CMAT – Fast traveling (pop) star from Ireland. “I Don’t Really Care For You” is one of the best songs of the 1920s. I expect a great future for her. Or at least a wonderful show at City Theatre on Wednesday night.

Meltheads – Young, intense band from Belgium. “Naive” is really becoming a cult hit. I expect them to completely tear down Huize Maas on Wednesday night.

Morpheus – Beautiful songs and ditto sound. Very dark and engaging. Somewhere between Tamino and Thomas Azier, but still owning enough to start building something on their own. I’m not going to miss this one at Noorderslag anyway. (photo)

Tips from head of program/marketing Joeri Gordijn:

The Royston Club – Throwback to indie-era 2008.

Picture Parlour – The song Norwegian Wood was very high on my spotify-wrapped last year.

The Indien – The Hague-based, so bit “Wij van Wc eend,” but every new song from The Indien is raunchier than raunchy. So that promises something. (photo)

Tips from marketer Wouter Andeweg:

Orisons Belte – Norwegian Psychedelic Groove. A comparison with Khruangbin might be just a little too simplistic, it’s a little more Yīn Yīn and a little more surf rock. I would go here just for the groovy basslines. Tip is their tasteful cover of the Brazilian classic ”Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser.”

Pearly Drops – This duo from Finland uses the Hyperpop vocabulary of sounds to create dreamy synthpop. Reminiscent at times of Oklou and A.G. Cook’s productions. (photo)

Hiqpy – Outside of a nice registration from 3voor12 and Popronde, there is fairly little music online. Indie Punk with a nod to house.

(But I join my colleagues at Parbleu and yunè pinku!)

TIPS from marketer Mees Trouwborst:

Parbleu: A Nu Genea expansion pack featuring, you guessed it, members of Nu Genea. Disco, funk, jazz. (photo)

Psyché plays immediately after Parbleu at another venue but also features members of this band. How will they do it?

Lusho: Has the potential to become another new Dutch hip-hop great in a long time.

Tips from marketer Mieke Meulstee:

GRAND SUN: funky indie rock with psychedelic influences. For fans of Shame and Parquet Courts. (photo)

COLLIGNON: Exotic, energetic alternative from the mind of Jori Collignon (Skip&Die) with members of Komodo and Yin Yin.

VIRTA: A greasy mix of ambient electronica, jazz, post-rock and psychedelia that keeps you on your toes and fully immersed.

And I definitely echo Maria’s tip: Brintex Collective!

Tips from marketer Pijke de Grood:

BROCKHOFF. Indie-pop just a bit more dark than you’re used to. Her EP I’ve Stopped Getting Chills For A While Now features her on the cover with a horse, bonus points!

Dottie Andersson. Pop tunes with a face. Her distinctive voice pounds through hidden drums and arpeggiators.

ELMER. Was and is at Sniester! Also last seen at Paradiso Tolhuistuin and is one big recommendation. A show with depth, discomfort, humor and raunchy lyrics. (photo)
